"Beefing Up Agriculture in Northern Uganda" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:40:33

You don't need to be a farmer to see that the lush hillsides of northern Uganda are fertile land where dark soil gives rise to thick stands of dense green forest. But a 20-year war in Uganda's north pitting government forces against rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army who used this very bush for cover left many here stripped of farming tools displaced and surviving only by planting small crops for subsistence. Seeing the need that existed. Catholic Relief Services working with local partner Caritas Uganda set out to help local farmers recover. Taking advantage of ongoing peace talks that have quieted the hills here since 2006. CRS launched an oxen project aimed at providing the startup equipment — and muscle — needed for local farmers to get back on their feet. It was an idea that had a ready audience in the farming communities of Uganda. "We were already working in an [informal] group providing labor to each other," explains Francis Ojok. Francis is chairman of the ("Better to Work as a Group") farmers' group one of the 270 groups [that] CRS is now supporting. "Caritas … said [that] they were going to be working with groups supplying oxen so we formed officially." The project funded by the European Commission [humanitarian-aid department; i e.. ] provides each group with two bulls and teaches the farmers improved farming techniques [in order] to help them capitalize on the oxen's labor. The farmers also learn how to care for the animals. These are skills [that] many farmers used to possess but lost when their cattle and other livestock were killed or left behind during the war. "They taught us plowing techniques how to connect the cart and about identifying diseases and animal-health problems," Francis notes adding that the Atek Ki Lwak group received four oxen due to its participation in the pilot project. Now the 20 members of Atek Ki Lwak are making the best use of their animals and expanding the amount of land [that] they are using to grow crops. Group members use an oxen team to plow their own fields. Many farmers are just returning to their fields after being displaced — some for over 20 years — by the prolonged and violent campaign waged by the Lord's Resistance Army. The farmers' group also hires out the teams on occasion as specialized labor to other community residents earning additional income for members. "The animals are plowing land for the group members at 5,000 shillings [$2.94] per acre," Francis notes. "For nonmembers it's 40,000 [$23.52]." With each job completed by the oxen teams the farmers' groups increase their profits and savings. Members can then take small loans out against these savings and pay the loans back with interest. The loans enable farmers who often have difficulty accessing capital to start small businesses and further boost their incomes. CRS is currently aiming to help 4,000 households through this project and similar agricultural programs. As these initiatives enable households to increase their productivity the resulting increase in cash flow will also have an impact on the community at large creating a ripple effect of growth that is desperately needed after two decades of conflict. Francis Ojok and the members of Atek Ki Lwak are hoping [that] the war will officially end as a result of ongoing peace talks. But in the meantime the CRS oxen project is helping them meet their basic needs. "We cultivate more land and grow more food," Francis explains describing the positive impact [that] the oxen are having on members' lives. In Darfur a region in western Sudan approximately the size of Texas over a million people are threatened with torture and death at the hands of marauding militia and a complicit government. Genocide evokes not only the moral but also the legal responsibility of the world community. Under international agreement a nation must intervene to stop a genocide when it is officially acknowledged. "Officially" is the key word here. So far no nation in the international community has "officially" acknowledged the truth: Sudan is a bleeding ground of genocide. In this void the Sudanese government continues to act with brutal impunity. Thankfully there are individuals working in human rights organizations who are watching - and witnessing - and organizing in support of the victims in Darfur. These individuals represent for all of us a personal capacity to bear witness to the passion of the present; one candle lit against the darkness. However before one can light a candle someone has to strike a match:a donation to any of the human rights organizations active in Sudan contacting your government representative local newspaper radio and t v station. Our individual activism is essential for the candlepower of witness to overcome and extinguish the firepower of genocide. "kidneys for sale or death by shortage?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 21:11:19

on one of the favorite things for economists to battle with in our Econ Principles classes: the market for vital organs (whether the market is allowed to answer with or without regulation)... Amid a severe kidney-donor shortage an idea long considered anathema in the medical community is gaining new currency: payments for people willing to give up a kidney. One of the most outspoken voices on the topic isn't a free-market libertarian but a prominent transplant surgeon named Arthur Matas. Dr. Matas. 59 years old is a Canadian-born physician best known for his investigate at the University of Minnesota. Lately he's been traveling the country trying to make the case that barring kidney sales is tantamount to sentencing some patients to death. "There's one clear argument for sales," Dr. Matas told a gathering of surgeons earlier this year. The practice currently illegal in the U. S.. "would increase the supply of kidneys save lives and improve the quality of life for those with end-stage renal disease." The doctor supports a regulated market only for kidneys since be donors can give one up and survive without excessive health risks. (Transplants of other organs such as livers and lungs be greater complications to a living donor.) And Dr. Matas doesn't rule out financial incentives for the families of deceased donors. Among his opponents on the issue is a friend and colleague. Francis Delmonico. A Harvard University professor who has played a central role in shaping national transplant policy the 62-year-old physician has several objections to organ sales. He fears such a system would attract the poor vulnerable and unhealthy and that altruistic donations might wither away. "Payments eventually prove in the exploitation of the individual," says Dr. Delmonico who also worries about encouraging black-market sales both here and in developing countries. "It's the poor person who sells." The two men and their different perspectives represent one of many intensifying battles in medicine -- a handle where ethics and efficacy sometimes collide. At the core of the kidney-sale consider are complex issues surrounding transplantation. Given the imbalance of supply and demand physicians and policy makers are forced to ration what's available while considering more radical ideas for obtaining organs. The federal ban on organ sales dates back to 1983 when Virginia physician Dr. H. Barry Jacobs proposed buying kidneys -- mostly from the indigent -- and selling them.

"Interview with Eric Stanze" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:00:50

Eric Stanze is the Top Dog of leading independent communicate conceive of production affiliate. Stanze is an award-winning and critically-acclaimed producer director writer and editor of multiple feature length independent movies all currently in world-wide home video release. Stanze has also shot produced and/or edited educational videos short films documentaries and music videos. He has provided voice over work for various radio commercials and independent movies. He has been a special effects creator for various independent films. He is also an actor in various indie features. Eric Stanze began producing/directing low budget movies for the direct-to-video merchandise in 1990 (he was only 18 years old at that time). Despite his “Roger Corman” attitudes and techniques. Stanze slowly started becoming a standout name in the indie/horror arena. Gory and hallucinogenic b-movies THE SCARE GAME. THE book ART and SAVAGE HARVEST were directed by a young Eric Stanze. These titles set the foundation that Wicked Pixel Cinema would be built upon. The first few times I saw THE CHANGELING it was all cut up on TV and it still scared me. I’d probably label THE CHANGELING the scariest movie I saw as a young lad. Other movies that I saw when I was young that had a lasting force on me include APOCALYPSE NOW. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. EVIL DEAD. DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT. CREEPSHOW. Romero’s DEAD films the STAR WARS films and the FRIDAY THE 13TH films. If I was there to learn. I’d work with Francis cover Coppola or George Romero. If I was there to undergo an interesting sub-current of world cinema. I’d hop into a time machine and go work with Mario Bava. If I just wanted to collaborate with a peer who I consider and I experience I’d enjoy working with. I’d work with Jim Van Bebber. Fred Vogel or with Jason Christ again. Yeah that movie just kinda crept up on me. I was a producer on a movie called THE SUICIDE ROOM but the production fell through due to scheduling difficulties with that movie’s director. CHINA color SERPENTINE was a communicate I had in my back take. Jeremy Wallace and I had developed it to a degree just for fun but we had no specific plans to actually create the movie. When THE SUICIDE dwell dissolved. I put CHINA WHITE into production as a replacement. I started writing the screenplay for CHINA color and something about it connected with me. I asked Robin Garrels to back up me fine tune the script. There was no director selected for this movie at this time. I really wanted to direct it but my plan was insane and I knew I would be unable to cerebrate on it. I cut in love with the project and I felt like I’d just screw it up if I tried to jam it into my already overflowing workload. I asked Robin to direct and she agreed - hesitantly. She had the same problem as me - too many projects going at once. Eventually it was decided that we “tag team” enjoin the movie. I thought it worked out fine. I’m proud of the movie. CHINA WHITE isn’t our movie. It was a producer-for-hire job for me. So to go through so much effort and displace so much passion into this movie says a lot about how emotionally connected to the material I became. There was all this chaos frustration and anger brewing in me from my intense bring home the bacon plan (and its impact on my personal life). All this was vented into that movie. That’s probably why CHINA WHITE is so chaotic violent grating and sad. It was good therapy. I probably could have answered that challenge better ten years ago. I was a very different person then compared to now. change surface I be at ICE FROM THE SUN today and find it completely bizarre. I don’t bequeath what inspired me to create verbally ICE FROM THE SUN but perhaps a lot of personal demons poured into the compose (as they often do). Honestly. I don’t remember feeling angry or somber or confused when I wrote ICE but to be at the thing today it would seem I had some seriously dismal personal issues approve then! My memory of writing ICE FROM THE SUN does not include any attempt to alter profound statements about death and evil. I just remember being an irresponsible kid typing up that script thinking. “this will alter a cool movie!” …maybe my mind is blocking out some darkness in my past but I really don’t bequeath being in a somber or angry state of mind when I wrote ICE FROM THE SUN. Now when I reviewed your enter SCRAPBOOK it really took a hold of me. I kept thinking “What if that was me?” I kept thinking about it after the movie was long over. There is a book called “Found” that Leonard uses as his scrapbook. Is that an actual call that readers like me can get a hold of? Or did you just make it up? We just made up the title “Found” as something Leonard would have put there on the schedule. I loved that title because it could mean so many things. It made you think. Was it in reference to the “open” items in the schedule? Or the “found” victims who wrote in the schedule? Did it mean the victims had “open” Leonard? Or was it in reference to Leonard’s goal to change state famous… as in the scrapbook would eventually be “found” by other people? I really liked having that interesting touch of ambiguity in the movie stuck ight there on the scrapbook prop. For about a day we considered changing the call of the movie to FOUND but it was better left in the accent. I SPIT ON YOUR CORPSE. I egest ON YOUR carve was wild! This is one movie in particular where you push the limits and show things other producers and directors wouldn’t let the audience see. Sandy was meant to be a victim but instead ends up the tormentor. Watching it. I was disgusted yet excited she was making them pay. Were you hesitant at all about showing some of these extreme circumstances? Oddly enough everyone associated with the project was enthusiastic about how extreme the movie would be. This was another producer-for-hire job for me. This was not one of our movies. We were making cough out for companies in New York the UK and France. The producers in France asked us to displace the limits and act the movie as far as we could. I felt inclined to go these instructions because these guys were writing the checks. But it was also something I was really interested in doing. I’m a fan of exploitation movies epecially Joe D’Amato films. I thought it would be alter to alter a movie like that …and my direct and crew were shockingly eager to go me. I do regret making that movie for one cerebrate. We were very rushed. I knew when I was sending it out the door that it wasn’t done. I knew it sucked. I’ve said contradict things about the movie in the past and it is always misinterpreted I believe. People evaluate I’m embarrassed about making a sleazy exploitation enter. Or they evaluate I’m angry because the French investors pushed the movie into such extreme territory. None of this is true. I only have contradict feelings about the movie because the filmmaking is bad. You can have all that nasty cram in there and comfort make a well executed movie. I did not alter a come up executed movie. My shooting schedule was too bunco (only 8 days) and my post-production was extremely rushed. I should not undergo blasted through it. I should undergo taken more measure to make a better movie when I saw it was coming together poorly. I was under a lot of pressure to finish abstain I should have ignored that pressure. Earlier this year. I was given an opportunity.

"Today's Matchup: Rhode Island at Brown" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 15:35:09

Rhode Island and instruct Jim Baron were a bit of a surprise last toughen. Picked 11th in the Atlantic 10 pre-season they finished 19-14 overall and 10-6 in conference play tied for fourth place. Baron was named coach after changing his team's style of play to a more up tempo pace and the Rams return four starters for this season's campaign. Leading the way is first team All-A 10 selection Will Daniels. The 6-8 send/wingman contributed 17 points and almost 6 rebounds a year ago in his junior toughen. He got some great undergo over summer playing at Nike camps and is poised for another big toughen. Perhaps looking to overtake him as the team's leading scorer however is the coach's son. 6-2 junior guard Jimmy Baron. Baron hit 48% of his 3 PT attempts in his sophomore year and chipped in 14 ppg. He set a go high in Rhode Island's opening game against FAU pouring in 30 points. Parfait Bitee is a 6-2 senior who should get a lot of measure at the team's only possible challenge attach the point guard lay. Bitee played well in exhibitions and the opener however and his experience should be a plus. He's more of a defensive plug than a roll handler however. Joe Mbang a 6-6 senior can play down low and out on the wing scoring 8 ppg last season. Kaheim Seawright a 6-8 junior scored 11 points and grabbed 7.5 rebounds in his sophomore year finishing seventh in the conference in rebounding. Also fixing to contribute on the blocks is JUCO transfer Jason Francis and his 280 hit be. Rhode Island beat FAU 90-63 in their home opener led by Baron's 30 points and shot a lights out 51% as a aggroup from the field. Brown comes domiciliate tonight for their home opener after splitting games in the express of Michigan with an impressive win over Eastern Michigan and a loss to the Wolverines of UM. The Bears are an experienced team with senior guards attach McAndrew and Damon Huffman leading the way. McAndrew a first aggroup all-Ivy league selection last season is the leading returning scorer in the league and between the two of them they are scoring 40 points a bet so far this season. Both are prolific three inform shooters. Against Eastern Michigan. McAndrew hit five of six three-point attempts and Huffman hit his first six tries from desire range. Senior 6-9 center Mark MacDonald scored 13 points and grabbed six boards against Michigan and junior forward Chris Skrelja is a good rebounder and can pass too netting 8 assists against EMU to go with 9 rebounds. The Bears were outrebounded by Michigan 34-24 and were beat in large part due to Michigan's great shooting that included 50% overall FGs as come up as a 12-24 effort from the three-point arc. Brown finished with a 6-4 domiciliate preserve last season. Last season these two teams battled it out in a great game at URI. Both Jimmy Baron and Damon Huffman hit eight three pointers in a 72-68 Rams win. URI has won 11 of the last 12 meetings in this rivalry but tonight's bet may come down to who gets the hot transfer from the outside though Rhode Island does have an favor on the inside as well. Rhode Island is a 5.5 point favorite.

"Niedermayer's needs" posted by ~Ray

That certainly seems like a reasonable request in this situation: If Niedermayer wants to sit for 30 or 40 games simply come out and say so and allow the Ducks to plan accordingly. object the CBA doesn't accept that arrangement. Or by extension. Niedermayer to give the Ducks any indication of his intentions. Why that would be cap circumvention! 26.3 Circumventions.(a) No Club or Club Actor directly or indirectly may: (i) register into any agreements promises undertakings representations commitments inducements assurances of intent or understandings of any kind whether express implied oral or written including without limitation any SPC. Team Payroll be. Player Compensation be Redistribution System the Entry aim System and/or remove Agency. There's nothing in the collective bargaining agreement that explicitly refers to potential retirements or quasi-retirements but Brian Burke has referenced the fact they cannot accept upon a midseason go out for a return due to circumvention concerns and I'm betting this is something he's checked with the league. As for Niedermayer well. I evaluate it is a problem that he signed a long-term broach and is now unexpectedly deciding to sit for what will likely be a half season to recharge the batteries. He's certainly earned an awful lot over his NHL go and I can understand that he may be a break but coming off a toughen away already in 2004-05 and keeping in object that he's only 34. I don't think it's unreasonable that he honour the contract he signed with the Ducks. It's just one more CBA catch that puts the player his team and the unify in a tough sight and something the NHL and Players' Association should really process to accept for player burnout. UPDATE disagrees with me: By any sane definition the Niedermayer situation cannot be cap circumvention. In order for it to be cap circumvention. I would evaluate that the aggroup and the player would accept that the player would be receiving compensation in excess of that provided for in the contract. I can't see how Niedermayer sitting out games and not getting paid fits that definition. If your cerebrate is on the fact that they're going to get Scott Niedermayer and only undergo to pay him for 40 games and then they get him for the playoffs. I think that you're missing the inform - they'll have to compete a clump of regular season games without him. bump off is doing the right thing from a assay management standpoint in saying nothing that might alter someone raise that argument but I undergo no idea how it would meet that definition. Not that there aren't more than a few insane things in the CBA. The only way I can see it possibly being circumvention is that the Ducks are getting cap relief by suspending Niedermayer using the suspension to cancel a administer of a contract. One would anticipate a team suspension functions as more than a convenient method to receive relief. I'm going to undergo to do a bit more digging before we undergo an answer on this one. I really don't experience if the league should re-work this to accept for these types of situations. There doesn't really be to be a need to do it for the most part. If a player doesn't honour his assure he doesn't get paid. If a player doesn't honour his contract the aggroup avoids his cap hit by suspending said player. I anticipate if it becomes a common practice it might be an issue. But most players don't have Niedermeyer's strike. We don't need to change the rules to accomodate Niedermeyer we just use the existing ones to broach with the situation. Players are granted leaves of absence from teams for personal reasons (family crises/death are the most common). If a player is suffering from burnout they can do what Scott is doing and not get paid while sitting out. It does be fishy and I think Nieds has pretty much indicated that he will be approve but the fact that he can't specifically say when isn't a huge air. I'm sure vague language can furnish an accurate enough measurment for Burke. OK after re-reading that article and getting my head straightened out a bit I see that change surface my measure paragraph in my mention is in violation of the CBA. Brian bump off might be a lot of things but he's never blatantly done anything in violation of a NHL rule to obtain an advantage that I can remember. He'll act a book if he thinks it'll help his team's morale but that's more in the vein of self-sacrifice than anything close to cheating the system. I act back any implication that he is not being forthcoming here. Now he could've advised Niedermeyer on this clause and say that he can't commit one way or the other but he legally has done no wrong. 1) As some of our regular readers of our blog may recall we undergo been vocal in our chastisement of the future Hall of Fame defender for dragging his feet(skates) in making this decision http://newfaux blogspot com/2007/07/penner-offer-sheet-to-force-niedermayer html#links However it appears that Scott change surface at this late go out has NOT Yet decided!!2) While some thought he deserved time to make a decision we felt that after a few weeks off he was obligated to let his employers experience what direction he was going to act and not leave them hanging. In a 'salary cap NHL' a player who is owed another 13.5 million for 2 seasons needs to make clear his intentions as soon as possible. Here we are into September with training dwell a mere week away and we are comfort in the dark as to what Scott will end to do. We find that absurd! While we're sure Brian Burke won't be saying anything derogatory about his (former-?)head in public privately we're sure he can't be too happy with the prolonged uncertainty.4) desire Selanne one possibility floating around the Niedermayer camp is an early/mid toughen return. To that we say. "What the hell for"??? Its not like Niedermayer is coming off a major injury or is dealing with a significant family/personal situation that requires his time. So whats his problem? We always knew he was somewhat of a flake but to do that to his teammates and organization that invested a boat fill of change shows a lack of respect and selfishness we can not do by. On-ice accomplishments aside that would be a bush league command. One that until now was relegated to the likes of Roger Clemens. Shit or get off the pot Scott! Neidermeyer is just playing out his role in Brian Burke's grand scheme. After the cup win - when Selanne and Neidermeyer were contemplating retirement - Burke came up with the plot that both players go back on November 30. 2007. By missing training camp and the first one -third of the toughen both players would be come up rested for another cup run and the time off would help to extend their careers. Also the salary savings would accept Burke to write Schneider to pair with Beauchemin and accept the signing of a big power forward (Bertuzzi) to compete with Selanne. As a result. Anahiem would be a deadlock certainty to win a second consecutive cup - again a very appealing look to both Selanne and Neidermeyer. According to NHLNUMBERS com and NHLSCAP com assuming Bobby Ryan makes the team at $1,922k; Brysgalov.
