We're in the midst of the second torrential downpour of our surprisingly early rainy season on this Comic Art Friday. (The first wouldn't you know arrived on Tuesday night — just in time for the 95-mile drive home from chorus rehearsal. It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature.. or.)It's not the sort of day on which you'd want to go running around outdoors in your bare feet. If you did however it would probably mean that you were one of the two superheroines featured in this Common Elements pinup by comic book artist best known for his work on the series Mantra and Maze Agency. On the left that's a staple of Marvel Comics' Avengers during the 1970s. On the right that's (real name: Cindy Reynolds) who began her crimefighting career with the Justice League of America and more recently served with the all-female superteam Birds of Prey. As your discerning eye has no doubt already perceived the Common Element between these two heroines is their utter disdain of footwear. From my armchair perspective it would appear that dashing into the heat of superheroic battle with unshod tootsies would be the height of folly. All an enemy would need to disable a barefoot opponent would be a few shards of broken glass (think Bruce Willis in the first Die Hard movie) a fistful of thumbtacks (available for a less than a buck at any convenient discount retailer) or just a well-aimed boot heel. But for Mantis and Gypsy the feeling of hot asphalt beneath their soles must be worth the tactical disadvantage. Mantis was one of the features that made reading Avengers so much fun back in that halcyon Disco Age. For one thing she possessed one of comicdom's most unique speech patterns always referring to herself in the third person as "This One." She also had a complex and intriguing backstory — the half-German half-Vietnamese daughter of a supervillain named Libra. Mantis (who never so far as I can recall had a real name) was raised by aliens from outer space rigorously trained to excel in every form of martial arts spent most of her pre-superheroine adulthood selling sexual favors on the streets of Hanoi (silly rabbit — comic books are for kids!) and had been designated as the Celestial Madonna destined to give birth to the savior of the universe. Besides all that. Mantis was cute provocatively dressed and kicked evildoer butt in her bare feet. How could you not love her? Mantis's creator writer was so enamored of her that he reinvented new versions of her at practically every comics company for whom he later worked. At DC Comics. Englehart's Mantis avatar went by the name Willow; at Eclipse and Image she was known as Lorelei. This is probably just an urban legend but I've heard tell that Englehart keeps a dressed like Mantis in his bedroom closet. (Okay. I just made that up. But it wouldn't surprise me if it were true. The man's obsessed. I tell you.)For her part. Gypsy — whom I liked mainly because she was a frequent comrade-in-arms to one of my favorite heroines. Vixen — later sold out on the barefoot ideal exchanging her ragtag fortune-teller costume for an armored outfit complete with boots. (Say it ain't so. Cindy!) I believe she's since gone back to the sans-shoesy style. You can take the girl out of the barefoot but you can't take the barefoot out of the girl. Being proactive and thoughtful superheroines both Mantis and Gypsy asked me to remind you once again that October is. Early detection is your best friend. I had to look it up to refresh my memory but for a while Mantis went by the name "Mandy Celestine" a play on Mantis and "Celestial Madonna". A bit of useless info from my days reading West Coast Avengers. :)The Wikipedia entry I read also mentioned Steve Englehart using different versions of the same character through two other companies though I doubt Marvel considers that canon anymore than DC accepts that Barry Allen popped up in Mark Gruenwald's Quasar as a super fast amnesiac going by "Buried Alien". Ohhhh. I've wasted my life. :)

You scored as Either. You hit is neither specifically male nor female in the way you realise your surroundings. As bad as this may sound to some it can easily mean that you are capable of combining both gender aspects to your advantage. Rather than being genderless you are possibly able think freely. This does not mean that you are bisexual or androgynous or indecisive but it might. This does not convey that you are bisexual or androgynous or indecisive but it might. HAHAHAHA! It might. It might. "Female artists, children's books, sextiles & semis" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:58:39

Sharp intakes of breath on discovering how astrology permeates everything - Art. Music. Writing. Politics. Life - and is dusted over these thoughts. The five female artists whose bring home the bacon I decided to look at were all born in the latter part of the 19th century. Their best bring home the bacon was in illustrating famous books for children such as 'Alice in Wonderland'. 'The wet Babies'. 'The Pied Piper'. There were also of cover the chubby cheeked kids, the pretty fairies and the constant tweeness - pleasant enough in small doses. For passing readers not familiar with the call "twee" in Britain it's used to describe anything excessively cute dainty delicate whimsical or kind of ultra- homely. I've noticed by the way that in the USA tweeness is quite popular. Female artists in command were change state on the ground in the 19th/early 20th century but it isn't surprising that women would excel in this specialised genre - it's in their daub. The ability to visualise a children's world what pleases them - whimsy and gentle fantasy are likely to be stock-in-trade. There were male illustrators too of course but in this genre the ladies managed to find a more aim playingfield. In their era this kind of art would have presented a more proper pursuit for the lady with artistic talent who didn't wish to alter her reputation by joining those naughty bohemians living it up(or drink)in Paris. I've featured three English artists and two from the USA. (Alphabetical order). Samples of the bring home the bacon of each can be seen in my little video compilation below. Mabel Lucy Attwell born in London. England 4 June 1879Cicely Mary Barker born in London. 28 June 1895Kate Greenaway born in London 17 walk 1846Bessie Pease Gutmann born in Philadelphia PA. USA 8 April 1876Jessie Wilcox Smith born in Philadelphia PA on 6 September 1863(The small illustration at the beginning of this entry is by her.)I compared the five 12 noon charts concentrating only on positions of Venus (art). Neptune(imagination). Mercury(communication)and Jupiter(publishing) looking for any similarities. There's a goodly amount of Taurus and/or Cancer showing - this seems appropriate to the subject be - Cancer ruled by Moon and representing mothers nurturing etc. Taurus ruled by Venus - love earthy beauty - (and probably tweeness!) The sextile and semi-sextile came up a lot describes these aspects thus: Sextile -a soft energy is generally ascribed to this aspect. Sextiles are about the easy and unencumbered flow of energy between two planets. There is a lack of tension inherent in this aspect which translates to the ability of the individual to accomplish much. Attraction is show and self-expression is enhanced. Semi-sextile - this Aspect is not quite as harmonious in tone as a sextile. advance there tends to be a fated quality to this Aspect. Semi-sextiles tend to create minor tension.... unease is the result and a sense that something should be done (or that if it were done all would be better). This Aspect also has a karmic tie. When two planets are semi-sextiling each other we be to experience that there is a lesson (albeit a small one) to be dealt with and effectively overcome. This lesson may well come to us from our past. Lastly with this Aspect there is always that karmic connection. Something is out there and while we're not quite sure what it is we just can't seem to break away from it. Is this yet another lesson from the semi-sextile? Sextiles between relevant planets in these charts link well to the art we're considering. Interesting that the sextile is described as "soft energy" - that does seem particularly appropriate. I'm not sure about the semi-sextiles - karmic connections? Could be! Anyway here are the similarities:Attwell - Venus on South Node(sensitive inform in map) sextile Mercury. Neptune sextile JupiterBarker - Venus and Neptune in sextile. Jupiter semi-sextile both planets. Mercury semi-sextile both Pluto and MarsGreenaway - Venus sextile Jupiter semi-sextile Mercury. Neptune/Saturn conjunction semi- sextile SunGutmann - Venus sextile Mercury with Neptune semi-sextile both those planets. Jupiter opposes Venus trines Mercury. Smith - Libran stellium of Mercury. Venus and Saturn opposed by Neptune in Aries. Venus semi-sextile Sun. Jupiter also in Libra trines Uranus semi-sextiles Mars. And here they are:- I'm British living in the USA. Occasionally blending in often sticking out like a sore thumb. I'm not an astrologer simply an enthusiastic follower forever drawn to the subject.(Credit for the blog header sketch goes to my husband.)
